Raquel’s Breakfast smoothie

The perfect green breakfast smoothie to start your day

  • ½ ripe avocado
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1 kiwi fruit peeled
  • 1 handful of baby spinch
  • 1 cup milk (cow, almond, coconut) – you can use water or coconut water if you like
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon organic honey
  • ½ cup ice

This is an awesome breakfast smoothie with all the nutrients you need to get your day started.

Avocado is a perfect way to get healthy fats into your diet, the fat in them can help you absorb the nutrients from plant foods. They are also chocked full of potassium (even more than a banana), fibre, powerful antioxidants that protect your eyes and can help relieve the symptoms of arthritis.

Paring the avocado with plant foods like spinach is great, it will help you absorb all the vitamins and minerals spinach holds including vitamin K, vitamin A, folate, magnesium, iron and many more. Baby Spinach also has anti- inflammatory properties which can help relieve the symptoms of conditions such as arthritis, osteoporosis, migraine headaches, and asthma.

Baby spinach is also high in protein which is great to have first thing in the morning. When you eat protein in your breakfast, you feel more energized and ready to start your day. Protein also helps keep up fuller for longer, which can lead to healthier eating habits throughout the day and possibly even weight loss

One of the only cons against baby spinach is it is high in oxalic acid, this can affect your bodies ability to absorb iron and calcium. Simply consuming foods rich in vitamin C will overcome this, hence why I add the kiwi fruit.

Kiwi fruit is packed full of healthy vitamins and minerals including actinidain, a protein-dissolving enzyme that can help with digestion. Kiwi fruit can assist in managing blood pressure, boosting our immunity, help fight heart disease, protecting us against macular degeneration and other eye problems. Kiwi fruit is also suitable for diabetics as it is a low glycemic index fruit, meaning it does not raise your blood sugar quickly.

I have also added honey and cinnamon as the healthy benefits for both of these are endless! Honey possesses anti-bacterial properties and cinnamon also possesses anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. When these two are combined together, they form a great potion for external infections. They can also assist in reducing cholesterol levels, fighting bladder infections, curing an upset stomach, improve digestion, boost our immune system and lots more.

As you can see this smoothie is an awesome way to start your day, it has the perfect balance of all the vitamins and minerals you need to get your day started!
