February Member of the Month: Lissa Becker

We’ve chosen Lissa as our Member of the Month for January to show appreciation for her bubbly, happy and helpful nature! Not only does she keep our regulars entertained, Lissa often takes new gym goers under her wing. Thank you Lissa!

Lissa-Becker-MOM-January_webHOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A MEMBER OF HEALTH MATES?
The first time I joined I was a member for 3 years, after which I moved to the North Shore. Now I am back this side of the city, I’ve been a member for 1 year.

WHAT INITIALLY MADE YOU BECOME A HEALTH MATES MEMBER?
I lived close and was a member of Revesby Workers’ Club. I hadn’t done any serious exercise before and thought it was time to get fitter.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT COMING TO THE GYM?
Having been to a few gyms on the North side nothing comes close to Health Mates (seriously!) I currently live half an hour away and would not even think of joining another club closer to home. Health Mates has a relaxed atmosphere with professional equipment and friendly staff. There is enough space and equipment to work out independently, or to pal up with other people if you choose.

WE OFTEN SEE YOU WELCOMING NEW COMERS TO THE GYM AND SHOWING THEM THE ROPES. WHAT DO YOU WANT NEW MEMBERS TO KNOW MOST ABOUT HEALTH MATES?
Firstly, I like to encourage people when they first start and try, to make them feel welcome—it can be a bit daunting if you don’t know anyone and the whole idea of exercise and gym is unfamiliar. I always tell them how great Health Mates is, compared with other gyms, and how they are on a really worthwhile journey. If they chose to come a few times a week, I encourage them to walk or do some sort of exercise on the other days.

DO YOU EVER RECEIVE FEEDBACK ABOUT THE FACILITY WHILST TRAINING?
So many people say it’s the best facility they know of—there are so many long term members who still come regularly. It’s great to see people of all age groups investing in their health.

IF SOMEONE ASKED YOU FOR ADVICE TO HELP THEM BECOME A REGULAR EXERCISER WHAT WOULD YOU SAY?

It’s all about making a commitment ahead of time—making it part of your weekly routine. Don’t wake up each morning and decide if you will come or not. Use the staff to create you an exercise program so you know what to do each visit, and work towards your goals. They will help vary your routine so you don’t lose interest. They will also challenge you to move to the next level. Above all, everyone is here for the same reason so join in and have fun!
